The concept of "blind computing" has its market.

We live in an era of complete privacy leakage, defined by bestselling author Shoshana Zuboff as living under "surveillance capitalism." In the past, people still fantasized about using pseudonyms for online orders, trying to make a last-ditch effort to protect their privacy.

But now, we have completely given up. Why?

In the AI era, privacy issues may be even more acute than in the era of tech giants. Can you imagine if OpenAI personally developed applications in the future, whether for short videos, navigation, or food recommendations—hypothetically, that AI would have the power to access your data. Then, the AI could instantly understand everything about you, including your various thoughts.

So, if there is a blind computer that can use its powerful computing power to process your problems while being unable to see your data (like a "blind person"), then this architecture is something that must be born in this era.

Cryptographic technologies like MPC and FHE have gradually matured, but someone needs to package these technologies into usable application-level solutions.

Nillion proposes this concept called privacy enhancing technologies (PETs), which are these cryptographic achievements turned into application-level solutions, ultimately creating an architecture for a "blind computer."

These PETs enable users to securely store data on a peer-to-peer network, especially high-value data, and compute without leaking privacy. This eliminates the traditional need to decrypt data before computation, thereby enhancing the confidentiality of high-value data.

For example, if you have an unsightly birthmark that you don't want to show anyone, your best option when you need a massage should be to go to a "blind massage parlor." Only blind people can provide services without seeing your privacy at all.

There are already some early developers within the ecosystem building solutions, such as private predictive AI tools, healthcare, and secure storage and computation solutions for passwords and transaction data.
