Rollup moves multiple off-chain transactions from the main Bitcoin blockchain to an independent network, processes them, and then submits a compressed transaction back to the chain. Common types of Rollup include optimistic rollups, ZK-Rollups, and sovereign rollups. Some representative projects currently include: B² Network, Bitlayer, BOB, Citrea, QED Protocol, Zulu Network, GOAT Network, Mezo, Bitfinity Network, Arch Network, etc.

In 2024, the Rollup ecosystem is rapidly developing, with the rise of application chains and customized L2 solutions driving innovation in decentralized finance. Competition among Rollups is gradually weakening, with more focus on cross-chain interoperability and user experience. ZK Rollup has attracted significant attention due to its privacy and performance improvements, while the next-generation virtual machine Rollups are outperforming traditional EVM in terms of performance. Meanwhile, the design and governance issues of decentralized Sequencers have become a focal point of discussion, and the revenue models of Rollups are facing challenges, but the overall market potential is enormous.

@ayyyeandy has made some predictions about the development of the Rollup ecosystem in 2025, as follows:

As the importance of chains declines, more value will flow to applications, and we will see thousands of application chains or L2s redistributing revenue to applications through governance or protocol design. We are entering an era where applications are starting to "take up arms" to demand their rightful revenue; otherwise, they will turn to their own chains or choose a base layer chain willing to share revenue. This will drive the emergence of more customized/niche L2s that can provide revenue distribution for applications, and there will also be chains specifically designed for applications, gradually vertically integrating their technology stacks.

Tribalism among Rollups will gradually decrease, as user experience will shift from switching between different chains to an overall experience of just "using cryptocurrency." Of course, we will still see competition between Optimism and Arbitrum, and ZK Sync and Scroll are no exception, but overall, I believe the competition among Rollups will decrease at the chain level, as communities are more inclined to jointly expand the market pie rather than fight over limited user shares.

The revenue of Rollups will decrease. This is partly due to the increase in the number of Rollups, the demand for Sequencer revenue sharing, and the trend of application chains building their own chains (which these applications might have chosen to operate as L2s).

Ethereum-based Rollups will begin to gain more attention in the tech circles, venture capital, and among Ethereum believers, as they are seen as key drivers in resolving the debate of "L2 being parasitic to L1." Application chain-based Rollups using the same pre-confirmation services or markets can achieve composability with each other and with Ethereum L1. This field remains a blue ocean.

Alternative virtual machines/next-generation virtual machine Rollups will rise strongly. These will become the Rollup technology stacks that perform best in terms of TPS and gas fees per second. Their performance will surpass any highly integrated Rollup that has not achieved parallelization of EVM. SVM, MoveVM, FuelVM, LinuxVM, ZKVM, etc., will gradually become popular, becoming homes for some very cool applications.

ZK Rollup is about to迎来 its shining moment. Although optimistic Rollups have dominated market perception and usage (such as TVL), the rapid performance improvements of ZK Rollups are noteworthy. I expect a large number of ZK Rollups to go live, with their costs and speeds also rapidly increasing.

The future of Ethereum and the modular ecosystem is very promising.
