The latest Ethereum Improvement Proposal EIP-7781 introduces a significant upgrade that reduces the network slot time from 12 seconds to 8 seconds, thereby increasing throughput by 50%. This proposal aims not only to enhance Ethereum's transaction processing speed but also to strengthen its competitiveness against high-speed blockchains like Solana.

Key Improvements of EIP-7781

  1. Reduction in Slot Time: By shortening the slot time from 12 seconds to 8 seconds, the network can process more transactions in the same amount of time. This means that more blocks can be generated in a shorter period, directly improving overall transaction throughput.

  2. Increased Blob Processing Capacity: The proposal also increases the number of blobs (used for storing transaction record data repositories of auxiliary Layer 2 networks) that can be processed per block from 6 to 9. This provides more space for Layer 2 networks like Arbitrum and Optimism to publish transaction data to the Ethereum mainnet, further enhancing the operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness of these networks.

  3. Enhanced Efficiency of Decentralized Exchanges (DEXs): Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake noted that this change could improve the efficiency of decentralized trading platforms like Uniswap by 1.22 times while reducing the price gap between on-chain and off-chain trading platforms. He estimates that this could save users up to $100 million in fees annually.

Impact of EIP-7781 on Layer 2 Networks and the Ethereum Ecosystem

Previous Ethereum upgrades have mostly focused on paving the way for the operation of Layer 2 aggregation networks like Arbitrum and Optimism. These Layer 2 networks provide higher speeds and lower fees by bundling a large number of transactions and publishing them to the Ethereum mainnet at once. EIP-7781 further optimizes the storage efficiency of blob data, providing a faster and more economical solution for these Layer 2 networks to publish data.

Moreover, this upgrade is the first in recent years to directly focus on improving the foundational speed of the Ethereum mainnet. By shortening the slot time, end users can experience faster transaction confirmation times. However, this may also put some pressure on validators, who may need to upgrade their hardware resources to cope with the higher block generation frequency.

Alignment with Vitalik Buterin's Proposal

Vitalik Buterin previously proposed increasing the gas limit and blob limit per block to enhance Ethereum's overall throughput. EIP-7781 aligns with his earlier proposal, manifesting as an "effective increase of 45M gas limit and 9 blob limit," which is very similar to Buterin's proposed 8 blob limit.

Conclusion

EIP-7781 is an important proposal within the Ethereum ecosystem that not only increases the throughput of the Ethereum mainnet but also enhances the efficiency and cost optimization of Layer 2 networks. This upgrade will undoubtedly provide Ethereum users with a better trading experience while strengthening Ethereum's competitiveness in the high-performance blockchain space.
