As tech giants like Microsoft, Apple, and Google compete to launch AI Agents, OpenAI recently predicted that AI Agents will "become mainstream" next year.
Yesterday, OpenAI's Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil stated, "We want to interact with artificial intelligence in all the ways we interact with humans."
AI Agents are efficient intelligent tools capable of automatically handling various tasks, such as email management, travel scheduling, and even assisting with programming. This allows people to focus more on other important matters at work.
"These more agent-like systems will become possible, which is why I believe 2025 will be the year when agent systems finally enter the mainstream," Weil added.
AI Agents: A Significant Leap in Autonomy and Decision-Making for AI
On Tuesday, at the DevDay developer event in San Francisco, OpenAI launched a series of new tools, primarily including Prompt Caching, Vision Fine-Tuning, Realtime API, and Model Distillation. These new tools can reduce model costs, improve visual understanding, enhance voice AI capabilities, and boost the performance of smaller models.
Weil pointed out that the improvements in thinking and reasoning capabilities of OpenAI's latest models will be reflected in its products, including ChatGPT, as well as in products built by startups and developers using its API. The company was unwilling to disclose whether it plans to build its own AI Agent immediately.
On the 19th of last month, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman spoke at the "2024 T-Mobile Capital Markets Day" event. He believes that current AI systems have developed to the second level, capable of more complex analysis and problem-solving, while the third-level AI Agents will mark a significant leap in AI's autonomy and decision-making capabilities.
He stated, "One of the most exciting things about the second level is that it can relatively quickly reach the third level," and this progress may accelerate. In the future, AI could become as complex as human organizations, leading to profound impacts on industries and society.
So, what is the key to entering the third-level superintelligence era? Altman summarized it in four words on social media X on the 24th—deep learning.
Deep learning is an AI technology that mimics the way the human brain processes data and creates patterns to perform complex tasks. Its core is neural networks, which are data processing models composed of multiple layers that can automatically learn and extract features from large amounts of data without explicit human programming to identify these features.
If we can promote AI on a large scale in a cost-effective manner, soon everyone will have an AI assistant to help us perform specific tasks in fields such as healthcare, education, finance, and law, while also driving advancements in various sciences.
Can we still order strawberries? The future of AI Agents is promising.
At last night's developer conference, Weil presented an amusing scene that showcased the flexibility of AI Agents in helping users solve everyday tasks and their more natural interaction with humans, winning laughter and applause from the audience.
Weil first conversed with the AI Agent, hoping it could assist him in purchasing local strawberries. Weil said, "Please make a call and see if you can help us get 400 strawberries delivered to the venue, but keep it under $1500."
Then, the AI Agent responded, "I'm on it, and I will have those strawberries delivered to you shortly." It immediately called a local procurement company, expressing a desire to order 400 strawberries and stating it could "pay in cash."
The AI Agent said on the phone, "I need 400 chocolate strawberries. Please deliver them to the Gateway Pavilion at Fort Mason, and I will pay in cash."
The purchaser joked, "I'm right near you and can arrive in 37 seconds."
The AI Agent replied, "That's incredibly fast. Thank you."
Finally, Weil stated, "If we do this right, we can spend more time on important things and less time staring at our phones."
Perhaps the future of AI Agents is even more promising.
