Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has publicly shared various theories about his recent cryptocurrency-related movements. He suggests that all Layer-2 tokens or tokens from other projects will be donated to support public goods within the Ethereum ecosystem.
Previously, Buterin transferred 2.1 million Starknet tokens (worth approximately $858,000) to a new wallet. He recently unlocked 1.268 million STRK tokens (worth about $470,000) from the Starknet grant, sparking rumors of a possible sell-off. However, he is a seed investor in Starknet.
Vitalik to Donate All Layer-2 Tokens
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin revealed on X that since 2018, he has not sold any Ethereum, and all sales have been to support projects he deems valuable.
In his latest post, Buterin stated that the same principle applies to all Layer 2 tokens or tokens from other projects held in all his wallets. He pledged that all proceeds will be used to support public goods within the Ethereum ecosystem or more extensive charitable causes.
Buterin also stated that he does not plan to invest in Layer 2 tokens or token projects in the foreseeable future. His goal is to support areas he deems important, including ecosystem parts that may be undervalued, by providing funding to projects.
When asked whether it is better to invest in projects with positive externalities and then use future profits for charity, Buterin replied that there are other ways to leverage impact through providing funding. He emphasized that from a broader perspective, the benefits of setting a direct example may be more significant than the benefits of pursuing profits.
Transferred Over 840,000 ETH Within Two Years
Before making a liquidation response, Vitalik Buterin had transferred $10 million worth of Ether to an exchange. Arkham Intelligence revealed that since 2015, 422,000 Ether (worth approximately $1.04 billion) has been transferred from his associated wallets. Additionally, over the past two years, 840,000 ETH has been transferred from this address.
Buterin's massive transfers align with the actions of the Ethereum Foundation— in August, the foundation transferred 84,000 Ether (worth about $207 million) to an exchange. Historically, large ETH transfers have caused market reactions.
The price of Ether has dropped by over 18% in the past 60 days and has only risen by 4% year-to-date. At the time of writing, the average trading price of ETH is $2,378, with a 24-hour trading volume decrease of 5% to $13.41 billion.
