The first 1000 pre-order customers will receive special NFTs, and there are less than 100 left.

It is not uncommon for blockchain projects to personally enter the market or collaborate to launch hardware products in the current Web3 industry. The promotion method of token airdrops has been extremely successful—perhaps people are not buying a "Web3 phone" for the phone itself, but for the potential token airdrop behind it.

In this context, Mysten Labs (a Sui blockchain development company) and the game startup company Playtron have collaborated to launch the handheld game console SuiPlay0x1, which is currently open for pre-order. The first 1000 pre-order customers will also receive special soul-bound NFTs, entitling them to special access, rewards, and benefits.

Is it worth buying?

Setting aside the expectations for airdrops, let's first take a look at the handheld game console itself.

Price and Configuration

Priced at $599, payment can be made with SUI, SOL, or ETH.

First, the conclusion: excluding all Web3 and cryptocurrency factors, the promised configuration of SuiPlay and its price are "acceptable."

The official website image shows: After the pre-sale, the original price will be $649

Hardware Specifications

The pre-sale price of $599 (excluding taxes and shipping) comes with the following configuration:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7840U
  • GPU: AMD Ryzen 780M
  • Memory / Storage: 16 GB DRAM memory, 512GB SSD capacity + expandable storage
  • Screen: 7-inch borderless IPS screen, with a resolution of 1920 x 1200
  • Battery: 48 - 50 Wh, 65 W PD fast charging
  • Wireless Connection: WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2
  • Operating System: Playtron operating system
  • Dimensions: 264.5*105.5*21.5 mm
  • Controller Top Height: 36.1 mm
  • Weight: 677 grams
  • Color Options: White

This level of hardware and pricing is roughly equivalent to the entry-level configuration of flagship handheld game consoles from about a year ago (which would be almost two years by the time of the official release), and compared to other Web3 hardware that is 3 to 5 years behind (Saga, Jambo, CoralApp…), it can be considered as progress. (Reference product: The lowest configuration of the AYANEO 2s 7840U version released last year is almost identical to the hardware configuration of SuiPlay, and its price at the time of launch was 4699 yuan)

Playtron OS

Playtron, which collaborated with Mysten Labs to launch Play0x1, is an open-source company focused on handheld game console operating systems, and SuiPlay0X1 will be its first hardware product.

Founded by Kirt McMaster, the former founder of Cyanogen (a well-known third-party Android ROM), Playtron OS, like SteamOS, is also based on Linux and supports both x86 and ARM platforms. It is expected that well-known handheld console manufacturers in China, such as AYANEO, will also launch products with Playtron OS by the end of this year.

SuiPlay0X1 will be powered by Playtron OS and will be the first handheld gaming device integrated with the Sui blockchain, natively supporting Sui games as well as games from the Steam and Epic libraries.

PlaytronOS supports game platforms such as Steam, Epic, and GOG

Ecosystem Games

SuiPlay0X1 will also become the main venue for Sui-supported chain games, such as Xociety (a popular shooting game that combines RPG elements, dynamic PvP, and immersive PvE experiences) and DarkTimes (a free medieval combat battle royale game inspired by Nordic style, with a physics-based combat system).

Playing related chain games with SuiPlay0x1 may provide certain bonuses (token airdrop?).

Potential Airdrop

When it comes to Web3 devices, the most concerning aspect for everyone is the airdrop.

The first 1000 pre-order customers of SuiPlay will receive special soul-bound NFTs, and the official statement indicates that they will have special access, rewards, and benefits. This strategy is clearly aimed at benchmarking the Solana Saga phone. However, whether there will be a related airdrop frenzy still depends on whether the ecosystem projects cooperate with the official statement.

But compared to the original price of 1000 u before the price reduction and the total quantity of over ten thousand for Solana Saga 1, the $599 price of SuiPlay and the limited quantity of 1000 NFTs seem to offer relatively good odds. On average, owners of the Solana 1st generation phone received over a thousand dollars in tokens, so for SuiPlay NFT holders, "only" a total airdrop value of $600,000 is needed to break even.

Moreover, even if there is no airdrop in the end, at least you will be able to get a gaming console with the same configuration currently selling online for 3,000 to 4,000 RMB in the first half of next year.

Airdrops are not guaranteed to break even, but games may bring you joy.

Note: As of the time of writing, the author persuaded a colleague to buy one, and his NFT number is 907.
