I see in the comments section that some friends are being a bit too harsh.

(Note the timeline)

The development company of Black Myth: Wukong, Game Science, was formed in 2014 by the original team members who left Tencent. Initially, they developed two conventional online games, which were considered moderately successful.

At that time, the gaming industry was booming, so in 2017, the first round of investment was led by Hero Entertainment, which acquired a 20% stake.

Then in 2020, Game Science started investing heavily in developing Black Myth: Wukong. In 2021, Tencent's second round of investment acquired a 5% stake.

It must be acknowledged that there was a "sentimental" bonus and a "former employer" bonus. However, these were not decisive factors. If they were, the first round of investment should have been made.

You should know:

  1. At that time, from 2020 to 2021, the approval of game licenses in China was significantly tightened.

  2. External doubts and criticisms have never ceased. Many people would rather believe in the worst-case scenario, thinking that Game Science lacked funds and experienced talent drain.

  3. This track is a track that has never existed in the domestic gaming industry.

This market is a market that is almost transparent in the domestic gaming industry.

At that time, from the perspective of Hero Entertainment, Game Science was still following the standard routine of a typical Chinese online gaming company.

From Tencent's perspective, Game Science was already a lone hero in the desperate battle to create a domestic single-player 3A masterpiece.

If you were in Tencent's investment department, would you dare to invest?

Or let me ask you: even if you invest, how do you plan to exit???

This, this is the real "facing destiny".

Certainly, Tencent is not short of money, but Tencent can invest in almost all cases in China. They have more money and more choices, but the money is never enough.

By 2023, Tencent is still willing to invest in Hero Entertainment. Many people in the industry believe that this is because they value their stake in Game Science (although previous analyses suggested that Hero Entertainment had already sold off at least a portion). By then, Black Myth: Wukong probably had already developed a test version, and seeing the actual product, this investment could be considered a FOMO (fear of missing out) buy-in.

But it still must be acknowledged that the bold move in 2021 was still courageous.

Without that bold move, there would be no Black Myth: Wukong today.
