In the world of blockchain and cryptocurrency, user experience is an important factor driving the popularization and application of technology. Based on this, Solana Labs recently partnered with Dialect to launch two tools: Actions and Blinks. These tools aim to seamlessly integrate blockchain operations into various corners of the internet, allowing users to complete various on-chain operations without leaving the current application.

Specifically, Solana Actions is a set of APIs that allow developers to create blockchain transactions directly from their applications. Users can execute various Web3 native transactions, including asset transfers, NFT interactions, voting, staking, and even rewarding content creators, without leaving the current environment. The ease of use provided by Actions lowers the threshold for blockchain interactions, allowing users to complete transactions without navigating complex decentralized applications (Dapps).

Blinks (Blockchain Links) can convert Solana Actions into shareable, metadata-rich links, enabling users to launch blockchain transactions directly from a URL. This feature allows on-chain transactions to be executed on various platforms, including websites, social media, and even physical QR codes, without switching to different applications. Blinks can display additional functionality through client-side extensions such as browser extensions, wallets, or bots, enhancing the user experience. For example, a Blink on a website may trigger a transaction preview in the wallet, allowing users to complete transactions without leaving the website.

Currently, popular Solana wallets such as Phantom and Backpack support this feature, and other platforms are expected to integrate this feature soon. In simple terms, Actions is a standardized API for developers on the Solana chain, providing users with a convenient tool to control various blockchain transactions, whether it's purchasing tokens, voting, or minting NFTs, all in one place without the need to open multiple applications or websites. Blinks, on the other hand, is a user-facing interactive front end that can convert any Solana Action into a shareable link, allowing users to perform on-chain operations directly on social media. By using plugins to interact with traditional centralized social platforms, we can truly achieve "using Solana everywhere."

To achieve this functionality, Solana is further integrating with various platforms and protocols, such as Jupiter, Solflare, Phantom, and others.

Although Blinks is still in the testing phase, it has already integrated over 50 functionalities, and here are a few use case examples:

  1. Prediction markets and voting: Users can directly pay cryptocurrencies on Twitter for sports betting, event predictions, or voting on future proposals.

  2. Multi-signature wallet operations in private messages using Blinks: Users can send Blinks links in private messages for other wallet holders to approve transactions.

  3. Airdrop checker: Users can check the eligibility of their NFTs and tokens for airdrops through message signing and collect small fees.

  4. Mini-games: Developers can create interactive mini-games and quizzes and capture user input through Blinks.

  5. NFT minting and auctions: Users can directly mint, auction, and purchase NFTs on Twitter.

  6. Cryptocurrency-paid messages: Users can send paid messages, and creators can view and reply to these messages through a dashboard.

  7. Event registration: Users can connect their wallets, register and check event eligibility through action posts.

  8. Token-based content market: Creators can control access to their content through Blinks, using NFTs for payment, making the content more exclusive.

  9. Transactions in private messages: Users can directly send, purchase, and trade meme tokens and NFTs in chat interfaces.

  10. Payment requests and settlements: Users can send and request USDC in chats and settle transactions in the chat interface.

  11. Cleaning up unused NFTs and token accounts: Users can destroy unwanted NFTs and junk tokens through Blinks.

  12. Meme creation tools: Blinks allow the meme community to create mini-games and tools on Twitter and interact directly with the community.

  13. Validator native staking: Users running validators can attract liquidity and native staking by creating Blinks.

  14. Time purchase: Users can directly purchase time from their favorite crypto Twitter influencers on Twitter.

  15. Platform operations: Users can directly perform various crypto platform operations on Twitter, such as lightning transaction fees, supporting or opposing proposals, and more.

  16. GitHub sponsorship and tips: Users can directly provide tips or sponsor their favorite developers on GitHub through Blinks.

  17. Developer interactions: Developers can monetize their open-source work directly through Blinks.

  18. Operations within NFTs: Users can create interactive NFTs containing operations to enhance their utility.

  19. YouTube with Blinks: During live streams, YouTube creators and viewers can interact through encrypted Splash.

  20. Blinks in Telegram private messages: Users can send, receive, trade, and mint NFTs and tokens in Telegram private messages.

  21. Apple device integration: Blinks can integrate with Apple's App Clip and NFC.

  22. Super applications: Developers can more easily create super applications and embed Blinks into any website.

From the above use cases, Solana Actions and Blinks provide a convenient way to embed blockchain transactions into social media and other platforms, simplifying user operations, enhancing user experience, and promoting the widespread adoption of blockchain technology.

Here are the steps for using Blinks:

  1. Set up a wallet:

    • Wallets that support Blinks include Phantom, Backpack, and Solflare.
    • Users need to enable Solana Actions functionality in the wallet settings.
  2. Execute transactions:

    • Users can copy and paste the transaction URL to Twitter or other platforms.
    • After clicking the link, users can complete transactions without leaving the platform, such as purchasing JUP, NFTs, or participating in governance voting.

From the evaluations, some believe it will bring revolutionary innovative experiences with unlimited possibilities, while others think it's just a surface improvement in convenience for PC users. In the short term, "high praise / strong criticism" views are not objective, and this new technology needs to be critically analyzed.

From the advantages perspective, Blinks allows users to immediately conduct transactions by clicking on links, increasing the immediacy and convenience of operations. Users can directly complete blockchain transactions on social media platforms, such as purchasing tokens, voting, minting NFTs, etc., without the need to switch to other applications or websites, simplifying the process of blockchain transactions and lowering the barrier for users to adopt blockchain technology, which helps attract more users to the crypto market. In addition, Blinks can be applied in various scenarios such as prediction markets, airdrop checks, mini-games, encrypted paid messages, event registration, content markets, greatly expanding the application scope of blockchain technology. Blinks can be embedded in various platforms such as Twitter, Telegram, GitHub, etc., expanding its use cases and user base.

However, Blinks currently only support desktop users and have not covered mobile users, limiting its application scope and user experience. Additionally, despite providing a convenient way of operation, traditional Web2 users may have insufficient awareness of the security and risks of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology, which may lead to doubts about the new technology. This technology requires users to have sufficient trust in the security of the platform and links, and how to establish this trust remains a challenge.

Overall, as an innovative attempt in blockchain interaction, Solana Actions and Blinks have great potential and broad application prospects. However, their future development needs time to validate. Whether it is a revolutionary innovation or a fleeting attempt ultimately depends on whether they can address user pain points in practical applications and gain widespread acceptance and trust.
