The demand for AI in the crypto world is still up for discussion, but it seems that the crypto world can't seem to do without the narrative of AI.

"Without AI, no encryption" has become the representative phenomenon of this cycle. And it seems that the more the story of AI is told, the more people are buying into it.

On July 2nd, the open-source AI collaboration platform Sentient announced a financing of 85 million US dollars, with leading investment from Founders Fund, Pantera Capital, and Framework Ventures, and follow-up investments from Ethereal Ventures, Robot Ventures, Symbolic Capital, Delphi Ventures, and another wave of massive financing.

In this "atypical bull market," this massive seed round financing appears exceptionally dazzling. The last phenomenon-level AI fundraising king was Bittensor?

Is Sentient something substantial or just another wave of fundraising hype? Let's interpret it.

A joint AI "trailer" from China and India?

According to a tweet from Polygon co-founder Sandeep Nailwal, Sentient's birth originated from his conversation with EigenLayer founder Sreeram Kannan about the future development of encryption and AI. Later, Sreeram Kannan shared this conversation with Princeton University professor Pramod Viswanath (co-inventor of the 4G wireless standard Flash OFDM) and Indian Institute of Science professor Himanshu Tyagi, and the results coincided with their research. After the collision of ideas, Sentient officially debuted.

Interestingly, three of the four core contributors to the project are Indian, and there are also several Chinese-founded institutions among the investors. Are China and India jointly pooling resources to make a big impact?

With both money and people, what does this joint Chinese-Indian "AI blockbuster" plan to do in this cycle of encrypted AI?

We looked through the project materials and can only say that this joint Chinese-Indian production is still in the teaser stage.

Making open source last longer

The current AI technology is monopolized by a few corporate organizations, and developing open-source AI lacks sufficient incentives for developers. As AI develops, open-source developers lack long-term support, and collaboration among developers is needed to achieve better development results. It can be seen that the development of open-source AI is more difficult than imagined, not to mention challenging the powerful AI in the hands of monopolistic organizations.

Yes, AI should be open source and free, but if insisting on open source results in not being able to make a living, then "anti-monopoly" matters will have to be put on hold.

Sentient officially claims to be the "Open AGI Foundation," aiming to promote AI innovation through community-driven methods.

For this purpose, Sentient plans to build an AI platform based on the Polygon Agglayer, allowing developers to collaborate and monetize their development contributions. Developers can quickly collaborate through the platform and monetize their contributions. By incentivizing developers, Open AGI can develop better and further.

OML Model

To achieve the platform's vision of "sheltering all the poor and making them happy," Sentient has launched a special hosted AI model "OML," which stands for Open, Monetizable, and Loyal.

This framework aims to ensure that the platform can remain open, monetizable, and loyal to the community while supporting developers' use.

Roadmap

The Sentient testnet will be launched this quarter, as outlined in the official introduction document, which lists Sentient's short, medium, and long-term development paths. Short and medium-term goals focus on the collaboration between the Sentient AI platform and the community (launching the first community activities), developing on-chain protocols, ecosystem construction, and standardizing the OML model. Long-term goals focus on the AI models built through community collaboration, the future of open AGI supported by OML, and innovative incentives for AI developers.

Conclusion

Sentient has a big background and good ideas, but issues such as contribution incentives are being addressed by many Web3 AI projects, and Sentient is not the first to propose them. Moreover, with such a massive financing, the number of people paying attention to this project was scarce, and Sentient is still in the stage of not having any products launched.

As for why many institutions are willing to invest so much money in Sentient, which is still in the whiteboard stage, it may be due to trust in "Sandeep's leadership." After all, in such an atypical bull market, it's better to invest in places with stories, people, and backgrounds. The combination of AI and Polygon also provides an explanation for investors, right? After all, the bigger the pie, the ones who will ultimately pay for the feast will not be the VCs themselves.

After experiencing several so-called king-level projects, the path of investing in encrypted projects seems to be increasingly clear: it's about investing in people and creating projects.

Whether this is a "make money as easily as breathing" formula in the industry upstream, or a true recognition of technological trends and a daring bet with courage and strategy, remains to be seen.

However, as long as the market is rising, it is justice and the future; as long as it is falling, it is a scam and empty talk.

In the end, to what extent Sentient will strive for "continuous development of AI and improvement of personnel security," whether it can truly differentiate itself from other "peers," and whether it can capture the attention of limited users, let's keep an eye on it together.
