In an interview in 2019, Gavin Wood expressed his opposition to POW and his support for POS. He claimed that Ethereum adopted POW in its early days because it was simpler and easier to implement at the time, while POS was too complex in design. He also believed that Bitcoin's adoption of POW was for the same reason.
It is clear that Gavin Wood did not truly understand Satoshi Nakamoto's ideas. Nakamoto explicitly stated in an email, "I've been working on a new electronic cash system that's fully peer-to-peer, with no trusted third party. The main properties: Double-spending is prevented with a peer-to-peer network. No mint or other trusted parties. Participants can be anonymous. New coins are made from Hashcash style proof-of-work."
