The Ethereum Foundation has released the final schedule for the long-awaited Dencun network upgrade, signaling a significant milestone in Ethereum's ongoing evolution.

The journey of the Dencun upgrade began with a successful activation on the Goerli test network on January 17, 2024.

According to the Ethereum blog, the upgrade plans for the Sepolia and Holesky test networks took place on January 30 and February 7, respectively.

These test network upgrades are crucial steps to ensure the smooth implementation of Dencun on the Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) mainnet.

1. What is Dencun?

Dencun represents a major upgrade for Ethereum, combining changes in the network's consensus layer and execution layer.

It introduces several enhanced features, including the much-discussed EIP-4844, which introduces temporary data blobs or "protodanksharding."

This improvement aims to reduce transaction fees for layer 2 solutions, a significant development for Ethereum users.

2. Key Features of the Dencun Upgrade

This upgrade includes several key Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs), including:

EIP-1153: Instant storage opcode

EIP-4788: Beacon block root in EVM

EIP-4844: Shard Blob transactions

EIP-5656: MCOPY - Memory copy instruction

EIP-6780: Self-destruct only in the same transaction

EIP-7044: Permanent opt-in for signature withdrawal

EIP-7045: Increase maximum proof inclusion slots

EIP-7514: Add maximum epoch leakage limit

EIP-7516: Blob base fee opcode

To support the Dencun upgrade, Sepolia and Holesky have released multiple client versions. This includes updates for popular consensus layer clients such as Lighthouse, Lodestar, Nimbus, Prysm, and Teku, as well as updates for popular execution layer clients such as Besu, Erigon, go-ethereum, Nethermind, and Reth.

Impact on Ethereum Users and Developers: For most Ethereum users and ETH holders, there is no immediate action required unless notified by a trading platform or wallet provider.

However, node operators and stakeholders on the Sepolia and Holesky test networks need to update their clients to the latest version to be compatible with the upgrade.

It is recommended that application and tool developers review the EIPs included in Dencun to assess their impact on existing projects.

3. Why "Dencun"?

The name "Dencun" is a combination of "Deneb" (a star in the constellation Cygnus) and "Cancun" (the location of Devcon 3). This naming convention follows Ethereum's tradition of using star names to designate upgrades, with the consensus layer upgrade and execution layer upgrade named after Devcon cities.

Future Outlook: The successful deployment of Dencun on the Sepolia and Holesky test networks paves the way for its scheduled activation on the Ethereum mainnet.

This upgrade represents a critical moment for Ethereum, with the potential to change its transaction efficiency and overall network performance.
