From Arbitrum to SEI, every airdrop has been accompanied by a huge public opinion storm, and Starknet cannot avoid it either.

The discussion about the Starknet airdrop has been ongoing throughout December 2023.
On December 1st, after the official announcement of the airdrop plan by Starknet, the airdrop rules were then announced: a "provisions committee" was set up to distribute 9 billion STRK tokens. The official stated that the purpose of this organization is to ensure fair, decentralized, and transparent distribution of tokens across multiple projects and stages. It was also mentioned that the "devonomics" plan, which is planned to be executed and deployed in the first quarter of 2024, will allocate 10% of the previously accumulated 1600 ETH as rewards for transaction operators. 8% of this will be allocated to DApp developers, and 2% will be allocated to core developers.
Many ordinary users questioned Starknet's airdrop rules, which seemed to favor developers and ignore the interests of ordinary users. They also believed that this was a sign of Starknet's lack of confidence in its own ecosystem, fearing that users would take the airdrop and run. The official silence from Starknet has also caused confusion in the community.
In addition to Starknet, many projects have sparked widespread discussions during the airdrop period:
Arbitrum: Regardless of the color of the cat, as long as it contributes data, it is a good cat
In March 2023, Arbitrum initiated an airdrop with an initial total supply of 10 billion ARB tokens, with a maximum annual inflation rate of 2%. Regarding the token airdrop, 11.62% of the initial total supply will be airdropped to Arbitrum users, and 1.13% will be airdropped to the DAO treasury building applications on Arbitrum.
According to public data, there are a total of 2.66 million on-chain addresses, and the number of addresses eligible for the airdrop is 625,143, accounting for 23.5%.
After the ARB airdrop, many people stated that they received rewards for multiple addresses. It can be seen that when Arbitrum formulated the airdrop rules, it did not completely exclude bots from the list. They believed that as long as the address was active and contributed a sufficient amount of transaction volume, it was eligible for the airdrop.
SEI Airdrop Controversy
When recounting the airdrop controversies of 2023, SEI is definitely well-known.
Since August 2023, SEI has announced its airdrop plan, and there have been continuous dramatic events surrounding the airdrop rules:
The Discord real-name verification, which was launched but strongly opposed by the community, was later denied by the official due to community pressure.
The airdrop rules divided users into two major groups: incentive testnet participants and active users on six major public chains.
First, for testnet participants, according to the data, there were 7 million addresses participating in the testnet, including a large number of "witch" addresses. After users confirmed the amount of their airdropped tokens, many felt they were being mocked: the value of the tokens received by the addresses barely covered the gas fees incurred when performing testnet interaction tasks. Although it was possible to receive around 400 SEI by completing Twitter tasks and cross-chain tasks, many users still felt dissatisfied.
When SEI faced worsening public opinion due to the testnet airdrop rules, the airdrop rules for active public chain addresses reversed the negative public opinion.
The SEI Foundation tweeted that the number of eligible wallets for cross-chain airdrops has been increased from 500,000 to 1.5 million, including users from Ethereum, Polygon, Arbitrum, BNB Chain, Solana, Optimism, and Osmosis chains. The airdrop target has doubled directly, covering active users on mainstream blockchains in 2023. The rules for receiving rewards are based on cross-chain assets to the SEI network.
The amount of airdrop rewards that addresses can receive is roughly linked to two aspects: 1. Determination of active addresses: addresses with frequent cross-chain operations in the past year. 2. The value of assets cross-chained to the SEI network.
According to user feedback, this part of the rewards is relatively substantial, and because the number of airdropped addresses has increased, it has received more positive reviews from various groups.
Airdrops are directly linked to interests, and users attach great importance to them, attracting the attention of countless eyes, naturally leading to many controversies. From Arbitrum to SEI, every airdrop has been accompanied by a huge public opinion storm, and Starknet cannot avoid it either.
