TL;DR

  • Dimo's approach to IoT is good. The ownership of driving data will be a huge demand for users in the future. The product's design and commercial implementation are simple and feasible. At the same time, the founding team has many years of experience in IoT products, and their resumes are acceptable. If the product experience and early incentives are rich enough, they can cultivate a loyal user base.

  • DIMO and Hivemapper both belong to the Drive to Earn concept. The difference lies in DIMO's inclination towards rewarding the connection of devices and vehicle owners, depending on the effective usage time of the product by the vehicle owner and the connectivity of the device. Hivemapper, on the other hand, leans more towards the broadness of user data collection for maps. Based on this, the incentives for both products also differ. From the design of the token economic model, both consider various possibilities of adjusting incentive measures under the token inflation model to meet the long-term sustainable token economic rewards based on different user incentive needs.

  • At the same time, this NFT collects all vehicle information, allowing users to sell their vehicle data history records through any normal vehicle transaction. This greatly simplifies and protects users' privacy in terms of vehicle transfer, third-party information processing, and transaction processing. It makes all aspects of vehicle information supply very convenient.

  • In comparison, due to the different positioning of the market users, I personally believe that DIMO's market development will be easier compared to Hivemapper. The direct reason is that DIMO's design is more in line with user needs, making it convenient for C-end data collection and usage, while Hivemapper slightly leans towards B-end products.

  • However, based on the information collected so far, DIMO's team does not seem to have as much experience as Hivemapper's team. Perhaps they still need to strengthen their network expansion.

Research Reason: DIMO raised a total of $9 million in its seed round financing.

Basic Information

DIMO is building a user-owned IoT platform that allows drivers to collect and share their vehicle data. Drivers can understand their vehicles, contribute data to an open ecosystem where it can be used to build new technologies and applications, and earn DIMO tokens through participation. Built on Polygon.

Project Summary: Drive-to-Earn. DIMO aims to break down the barriers of all vehicle information sharing platforms and consolidate all platforms related to vehicle information. It uses the Proof-of-Movement (PoM) method for verification. A good example is the automatic parking and finding of parking spaces.

Framework and Product

Dimo's business model involves:

1. Users purchasing ($300 each) devices to start data collection;

2. Developers can develop applications and services based on their strengths, no longer entering closed distribution channels;

3. Under transparent rules, privacy and regulatory supervision can coexist, and under this coexistence, support for modern connected devices and digital public products can receive appropriate funding.

Framework:

By using open-source components to enhance the transparency, privacy, composability, and reliability of IoT networks - increasing user and developer trust in connected devices and services.

Based on this:

  • Users own and delegate access to connected devices, so they work for their owners, not the companies that make them
  • Developers can build applications and services to compete on their merits, rather than access closed distribution channels;
  • Privacy and regulatory supervision can coexist under transparent rules
  • Support for modern connected devices' physical and digital public products can receive appropriate funding

Participants:

  • Device manufacturers (OEMs). Control systems in cars need to respond to commands and inputs from users, third-party operators, and external sensors. Errors need to be shared.
  • Landowners. Price and availability need to be appropriately shared with current and potential users.
  • Application developers. Interfaces can be built into existing mobile or travel applications.
  • Regulatory agencies. Events and safety issues need to be shared without compromising privacy.
  • Parking lot operators. Real-time status of the lot needs to be conveyed to users and owners. Backup control needs to be provided to local parking lot operators.
  • Insurance companies. Receive data on risks to properly distribute risks and price policies.
  • Vehicle owners.

Components of the DIMO platform:

The core of DIMO is an ecosystem composed of streaming technologies such as MQTT, Streamr, and Kafka, distributed hosting technologies such as Kubernetes and Docker, and data storage technologies such as IPFS and S3.

It is functionally similar to other connected device solutions (iRobot, Nest, OnStar)

  • Connect devices
  • Control devices
  • Get data from devices
  • Manage access to devices

  • For hosting, it is hosted on Kubernetes by major cloud providers. Kubernetes allows web2 and web3 components that are not yet decentralized to be run by the DIMO Web Services team and will be decentralized as the platform develops.
  • In terms of authentication, DIMO supports most user flows of oAuth and uses Ethereum login.
  • Store the most important data within the platform using Ethereum and Polygon.
  • Use IPFS to store device data.

Distribute $DIMO tokens to users who provide valuable services to the ecosystem

  • Enable car owners to securely connect their cars to DIMO, allowing them to capture, store, and securely share their data
  • Use our tokens for large-scale data collection, storage, and analysis, keeping platform developers, data consumers, and application builders in sync
  • Build next-generation consumer products and enterprise services: JD Power, Kelly BlueBook and Consumer Reports, peer-to-peer car sharing and ride-hailing services, smart insurance, and car finance can all be rebuilt on our open technology stack.

Product Applications:

1. Open Vehicle ID (Beta testing phase)

  • Linking all vehicle information in the form of Open Vehicle ID (NFT), when vehicle data is sent to the DIMO network, the owner of the vehicle asset can access the vehicle's data, analyze it, delegate it, or authorize it to third-party users, such as for insurance, accident reconstruction, car sharing, pre-sale inspection, and more.

Main elements of Open Vehicle ID:

  • - Car photo or user skin: Users can create using the DIMO application's composer.
  • - Partial VIN: Although DIMO NFT does not use UUID or VIN as the primary key, users can decide to add part of it to the NFT.
  • - Manufacturing location: Reported by the car manufacturer to NHTSA (or other government agencies).

1.1 DIMO Vehicle Composer

Allows users to customize and create their open vehicle ID image. Currently, users can use over 10,000 combinations through Open Vehicle ID.

Composite elements: https://docs.dimo.zone/dimo/open-vehicle-id/dimo-vehicle-composer

  • Partial VIN (Vehicle Identification Number): Although DIMO NFT does not use UUID or VIN as the primary key, users can decide to add part of it to the NFT.
  • Manufacturing location: Reported by the car manufacturer to NHTSA (or other government agencies).

Open Vehicle ID serves as an open and scalable building block that can attach more data over time, increasing the value of the vehicle ID as a digital asset.

The value of this digital asset can be updated over time with vehicle data, and the value of the digital asset can increase with the addition of data.

Alpha Fleet ONYX NFT badges can also be claimed before obtaining DIMO devices.

1.2 Glovebox stores vehicle documents such as titles, registrations, insurance, and vehicle maintenance history.

2. Ethereum login support

In addition to traditional methods such as email and Apple, users can also log in using an Ethereum wallet.

Economic Model

$DIMO

Total token supply: 1 billion

Distribution:

  • 70% of $DIMO will initially be allocated to the community-controlled DAO treasury. The release of $DIMO will take over 8 years to fully unlock 80%. Approximately 45% of the tokens in the treasury will be allocated to a token pool for user rewards, with the specific amount yet to be determined through a proposal. The token pool will incentivize users to enter based on demand baseline standards.
  • The remaining 30% will be allocated to DIMO founders and contributors (estimated at approximately 225,000,000) and capital partners supporting key DIMO development activities (estimated at approximately 75,000,000). DIMO founders and employees may receive an allocation subject to a four-year vesting schedule, requiring ongoing contributions to the project. Capital partners will be locked for two years, after which 1/12 of their tokens will begin unlocking monthly over a year, unlocking 33% of the tokens.

Demand Signal

**Baseline Demand Signal:** Users are rewarded based on the duration of their connections, the type of car being driven, and the type of data being provided. The goal is to kickstart the network by incentivizing drivers to connect various types of cars and stream data types that we anticipate will be valuable to data consumers and application developers in the future. **Market Demand Signal:** Users are rewarded based on the fees paid by third parties for their data. For example, if Acme Corp subscribes to Alice's data at a price of $10 per month, Alice will receive $10 per month minus the amount (amount to be determined). **The bonus pool mentioned above is used for rewards for the Baseline Demand Signal,** where the amount and timing of the release are adjusted based on a set value, to be issued over 40 years, with 1,300,000 USD DIMO issued to users weekly in the first year, decreasing by 15% each year. **The setting of the weekly issuance time is based on the commuting time of the vehicles,** as driving behavior varies significantly at different times of the day (i.e., it is concentrated during peak commuting hours). If the issuance protocol allocates $DIMO on an hourly basis, drivers will be undercompensated during peak hours (as rewards will be distributed among a higher proportion of drivers), while drivers driving at 3 am will be overcompensated. Weekly issuance allows for a predictable issuance schedule, optimized transaction fees, and relatively frequent reward distribution without incentivizing abnormal driving behavior. When token distribution goes live on the mainnet, the weekly issuance from each pool will be allocated according to the following method. [DIMO token holders can vote](notion://www.notion.so/dimo/governance/voting) at any time to change these reward formulas, adjust the issuance amount, and create new pools. Tokens are allocated based on users' connection time and the number of connections. This design rewards and controls those who support DIMO in the long term; incentivizes ongoing data connections to more comprehensively tell the story of driver behavior and vehicle performance in the long term; and rewards users who provide more reliable data in terms of quantity and frequency, most importantly, to avoid rewards based on driving distance or time, to avoid incentivizing unnecessary and wasteful driving. **Community Ecology** **Heat and Sentiment** **Twitter:** The number of Twitter followers is relatively low, and the registration time is long. Dimo has been doing some application-layer things. For example, downloading the app to connect to the car and earn rewards. In addition, social media heat is relatively low. There are many Chinese channels on DC, which is strange. **Competition** | Project | Hivemapper | | --- | --- | | Introduction | Hivemapper aims to create a decentralized global map that rewards contributors.
