"Food and sex are human's greatest desires."

Hunger leads to thoughts of food, while adults think about love and relationships. These are desires that everyone has. Views on love and marriage reflect the society and industry, whether it's the portrayal of love and marriage issues in Taiwanese films from the last century or the contemplation of old and new concepts and pursuit of life goals in the WEB3 era of 2023.

What are the emotional states and views on love and marriage of those in the cryptocurrency circle? "Are you (still) willing to find a partner in the cryptocurrency circle?"

We once conducted a poll on Twitter, and the results showed that 51.9% of people are not willing, 13.9% are willing, and 34.2% are indifferent.

With curiosity and questions in mind, we spoke to numerous insiders and outsiders about their emotional lives. Some expressed hatred for heartless men, some accused women of being unfaithful, and some couples had both love and grace.

Love in the cryptocurrency circle, a bit dangerous

Impulsiveness is one of the key words for those in the cryptocurrency circle.

Choosing to enter the cryptocurrency circle means choosing an unstable life, which is quite different from the conventional way of life.

Moving between various countries and cities, people in the cryptocurrency circle rarely have time for love.

Frequent business trips, canceling plans for dates, having meals while attending international video conferences, video calling to monitor the market, socializing late into the night, and sleepless nights until dawn… These scenes have become commonplace in the daily lives of those in the cryptocurrency circle. Occasionally, there are some "dark dishes" added to the mix.

"Being intimate, only to have the partner lose interest due to drastic market fluctuations, leading to a disappointing end" has become an industry joke.

Although cryptocurrency professionals travel extensively, most of them work from home, spending 24 hours a day in the cryptocurrency circle, with little opportunity to interact with people outside the circle.

Newcomer Xiao 7 happened to meet her ex-boyfriend, who also worked in the cryptocurrency circle, through a dating app.

At the time, she firmly believed that she had met her "soulmate." "No one has much opportunity or inclination to deeply understand another person, and they are very guarded."

Xiao 7 said that the image the man projected quickly collapsed, and after the novelty wore off, his NPD (narcissistic personality disorder) traits gradually emerged. "They are particularly narcissistic and only love themselves."

Accustomed to multitasking in their work, some people in the cryptocurrency circle also enjoy polyamorous relationships in their emotional lives. Many have specific date partners in different countries and cities and do not develop long-term intimate relationships with any of them.

Xiao 7 also mentioned that there are too many "intelligent and beautiful" women in the cryptocurrency circle who are looking for shortcuts. If there are too many temptations around their boyfriends, it's easy for them to feel insecure.

The lack of companionship and the unpredictability of intimate relationships have caused many who were once in love to retreat.

Even industry-renowned "sea kings" have stated that they would adhere to their principles and not seek partners within the industry, as it's "too easy to become socially isolated."

N, who has had experience with industry relationships, learned a profound lesson.

"The industry is too small, and you can't avoid running into each other. Once you break up, it's especially awkward to meet again, and it's easy to become gossip fodder within the industry. All the details and privacy of the relationship will be gossiped about by the ex to everyone around."

In addition to the emotional value of the two individuals, considering the responsibilities of a family, both men and women in the cryptocurrency circle are "excluded" from the selection pool.

In the Twitter survey, most people stated that they are unwilling to find partners in the cryptocurrency circle due to family reasons, summarizing it as:

"A family cannot have two gambling dogs."

Andrew, a practitioner, told DeepTech Flow that he would never seek a woman from the cryptocurrency circle, as "they cannot settle down, their ambitions and desires are too great, and they cannot be a gentle mother. A family without a gentle mother will likely bring misfortune for three generations."

Some also believe that a cryptocurrency-savvy wife who can copy private keys is too frightening.

Many outsiders still view the blockchain and cryptocurrency industry with a biased perspective, not wanting their future wives, husbands, daughters-in-law, or sons-in-law to be involved in "speculation" and "scams" all day long.

Men and women in the cryptocurrency circle, neither one is interested in the other

During a gathering with cryptocurrency colleagues, YOYO and others found an interesting phenomenon when discussing love and relationships: it seems that men and women in the cryptocurrency circle don't seem to be interested in each other.

"Don't date men in the cryptocurrency circle; they are only here to make quick money. They only see money, not love."

YOYO has seen too many people in the industry whose values have been distorted after benefiting from the industry's prosperity, and she never considers cryptocurrency men as potential partners.

They are too materialistic, too practical, and they commodify everything, including love and women.

"Winning means getting a young model at the club, losing means going to work at sea," and "one coin, one model" have long been rallying cries in the cryptocurrency bull market.

In some commercial KTVs in first- and second-tier cities, there are many legends of mine owner bosses and cryptocurrency tycoons spending lavishly.

Many in the cryptocurrency circle started from humble beginnings, and certain opportunities and luck led to rapid wealth accumulation, which also brought about a sense of self-compensation.

"What I didn't have before, I now want to enjoy twice as much."

Especially for those working at exchanges and projects, they not only have to endure the pressure of market fluctuations but also bear complex unknown risks.

The "intense and thrilling" work, the uncertainty of tomorrow, has led them to adopt "living in the moment, living freely" as a life motto. There are also occasional rumors in the industry about the various romantic escapades of industry bigwigs overseas.

You Only Live Once; you only live once.

"Enjoy life while you can, seize the moment," is delightful for oneself, but perhaps it's a disaster for a partner.

Female practitioners have expressed that when dating a man from the cryptocurrency circle, one must lower their expectations, as "he can love you and treat you well, but he is also bound to enjoy playing around."

Similarly, male practitioners in the cryptocurrency circle have the same concerns.

"Can't hold on," Nil said that many women in the cryptocurrency circle often go clubbing, play cards, and participate in various business gatherings, easily coming into contact with cryptocurrency tycoons. There are also many "lecherous" men in the cryptocurrency circle, making him feel insecure as well.

In addition, some male practitioners in the cryptocurrency circle have expressed that pursuing women in the cryptocurrency circle has a low return on investment.

Perhaps having seen too many cases similar to "a 91-born woman in the finance circle made the male protagonist spend 50 million and still had other sugar daddies," some male practitioners in the cryptocurrency circle have seriously reviewed and started to devise "relationship investment plans" with a relatively higher "return on investment."

"Cryptocurrency women have seen money, and it's difficult to please them with money. Spending the same amount of money in a traditional industry can easily outshine others and easily find a better-looking, more innocent partner using 'financial capability.'"

Cryptocurrency couples, a double harvest of career and love?

With all these arguments and the occasional circulation of melodramatic PDFs about cryptocurrency and finance circles in WeChat groups, does it make you doubt "love"? But perhaps this is also a kind of "survivorship bias."

The injured shout loudly, while the happy remain silent, secretly enjoying themselves under the covers.

King, a practitioner, said that there are many "underground couples" in the cryptocurrency circle who do not disclose their relationship publicly and deliberately keep a low profile. They also have professional interactions, but those around them are unaware that they are actually in a romantic relationship.

Such situations are not only found in the Chinese world but also in the overseas crypto industry, where there are also many hidden underground couples.

A crypto VC that invested in well-known projects like Farcaster has its founder in an undisclosed romantic relationship with a female partner.

In response, Sienna, who once worked for a well-known crypto VC in Silicon Valley, said she understands. Her boyfriend is a well-known project founder in the industry, and in her view, when dating within the industry, if one person has a higher title, others are more likely to label you as "so-and-so's boyfriend/girlfriend" and make related associations.

Lisa, a woman who found her partner in the crypto industry and got married, said that her principle now is to keep a low profile, and she hasn't even posted wedding photos on her social media.

"People in the cryptocurrency circle love gossip too much. It's hard enough to find a partner, so we have to be discreet."

Beyond the many melodramatic stories, cryptocurrency couples can also spark many attractive and sustainable sparks.

For example, having more common topics, understanding each other's values, taking turns trading and supporting each other in the cryptocurrency market, and supporting each other in accumulating coins…

As a business manager, Niki, who has been in the cryptocurrency circle for many years, was called to a meeting by her boss on her first day, with a business KPI of adding 300 people. This was undoubtedly a huge challenge for her, as she has social anxiety.

Fortunately, she met her current boyfriend in the cryptocurrency circle, and with his encouragement, she successfully completed the task.

Over the years, the two of them have been mutually supportive in their careers. Niki also told DeepTech TechFlow that she found more problems with her non-crypto boyfriend compared to her boyfriend within the circle.

He had a hard time understanding her way of working, and they often argued about work.

"In the blockchain industry, it's either you deceive me or I deceive you," were the exact words of Niki's ex-boyfriend outside the circle.

Due to policy reasons, he felt that the risks in this industry in China were too high, so he had been trying to persuade Niki to leave the cryptocurrency circle.

Niki's response was, "I can love you, but not enough to make me give up my career."

Therefore, Niki believes that if both partners are in the industry, they can at least understand each other and grow together.

In the eyes of senior practitioner Feimo, not seeking partners within the cryptocurrency circle is a false proposition. "Even if you date someone outside the circle, they will eventually enter the cryptocurrency circle and become part of it."

Feimo has dated a boyfriend from the cryptocurrency circle, and despite the inevitable breakup, she still longs to find love within the cryptocurrency circle.

"Forever young, forever teary-eyed," Feimo believes that cryptocurrency lovers can build revolutionary friendships.

"We've blown up accounts together, made money together, stayed up all night fighting together, always curious about new things, become digital nomads together, and traveled the world. Being young is about being open and having abundant energy, and that's the foundation of the crypto industry."

Regarding the criticism of cryptocurrency women in the industry, Feimo is very indignant. In her view, cryptocurrency women are very high-quality candidates for love and marriage.

"Cryptocurrency women have strong learning abilities. Today, they're into DeFi, tomorrow they're studying narrative IP for small images. You don't have to worry about them being deceived, or about them getting old and senile. They'll be the most beautiful fighter jets at the square dance."

"Cryptocurrency ladies may not know how to cook, but they know how to hire a housekeeper without being taken advantage of. They also know where to get Nomad beauty treatments and invest in real estate globally. They freeze their eggs at the right time, have children in bear markets, and when they can't make money in the industry, they have a long-term vision for trading stocks and forex…"

In the cryptocurrency circle, there are still many loving couples who have successfully entered into marriage.

Arthur Breitman and Kathleen Breitman, the founders of Tezos, met through a chance encounter. At that time, Kathleen was a sophomore, and they first met at a lunch for classical liberals advocating for anarcho-capitalism in New York. Arthur was a quantitative analyst at Goldman Sachs at the time.

The two went through a period of mentorship and friendship, discussing liberal political views and learning about cryptocurrencies, eventually founding Tezos and finding love. They were also dubbed the "money-grabbing couple" by foreign media due to Tezos' huge financing.

Stani Kulechov, the founder of Aave, is married to Paris Rouzati, who was previously a partner at IDEO and later joined Aave as the ecosystem lead.

Paris Rouzati's name is "Paris," so Stani proposed to her in Paris. In the early stages of Aave's development, things were not smooth, but his wife gave Stani unwavering support. In a previous interview, he said, "Starting from May, I've been sleeping for about four hours every night, it's been too busy. I'm very lucky to have the most supportive wife in the world. She has helped me in many ways, and I'm very grateful for that."

On July 4, 2023, their child, Bear Atlas Kulechov, was born in London and immediately received the domain address of the decentralized social platform Lens created by Stani. From the first day of birth, he became a "Baby on chain," a unique romantic gesture in the crypto industry.

In the Chinese crypto world, there are many couples working in exchanges, projects, VCs, and media who have supported each other in their careers and achieved outstanding results.

Some say that love is the moment when all boundaries are broken.

Regardless of market ups and downs, I wish everyone can experience their moment of love and find their soulmate.
