At the time of ARM's listing, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son stated that artificial intelligence can help solve some of the world's biggest problems and has the potential to surpass human intelligence.
"I think this is the first time that humans have experienced something smarter than themselves," he said in an interview with the media before ARM's listing on the Nasdaq on Thursday. "Humans are the smartest creatures on Earth, and artificial intelligence will greatly surpass human intelligence."
Arm is the "core" beneficiary of the AI revolution
Son referred to himself as a "faithful believer" in artificial intelligence and added that Arm is the "core" beneficiary of the AI revolution. He stated that since he founded SoftBank, he has been a passionate supporter of the chip industry, and chip technology has driven the development of various technologies.
Arm made its debut on the Nasdaq on Thursday and was warmly received by investors. The company's IPO rose nearly 25% on its first day, with a market value exceeding $65 billion, making it the largest IPO globally so far this year.
ARM ended a nearly two-year "drought" of large tech stock IPOs in the US. With the Federal Reserve beginning its most aggressive tightening in 40 years, the US stock IPO market has been stagnant since the beginning of 2022.
After graduating from the University of California, Berkeley in 1981, Son founded SoftBank. Following the Arm IPO, SoftBank still controls about 90% of the company's shares, and Son continues to serve as the chairman of the Arm board. Forbes estimates Son's net worth to be over $24 billion, ranking him 69th on the world's rich list.
AI's benefits outweigh the drawbacks
Son also stated that it is certain that if not handled properly, artificial intelligence can indeed pose some threats to humanity. He likened the potential misuse of artificial intelligence to speeding or driving under the influence.
However, he pointed out that more positively, artificial intelligence can also help solve critical global issues such as diseases, or aid in relief and recovery from natural disasters.
"To protect humanity, society should regulate artificial intelligence," Son said. "However, its advantages outweigh its disadvantages. So, I think I am a believer in artificial intelligence. I optimistically believe that artificial intelligence will solve problems that humans have been unable to solve in the past."
In June of this year, Son stated at SoftBank's annual shareholder meeting that artificial intelligence (AI) is bringing about explosive changes, and the company will soon launch an offensive to end the relatively dormant state of the venture capital field over the past year.
