The Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, has officially claimed the top spot in the Multipolitan Crypto Friendly Cities Index, surpassing global financial hubs and emerging blockchain strongholds. The city’s high ranking is recognition of Ljubljana’s thriving digital asset ecosystem, regulatory clarity, and widespread adoption of cryptocurrency payments.

According to a report by the South China Morning Post, Ljubljana’s rise to prominence in the cryptocurrency space is credited to its proactive embrace of blockchain technology and decentralized finance (DeFi). As home to the non-profit Blockchain Alliance Europe, Ljubljana has fostered innovation and acceptance of virtual assets, with hundreds of retail venues supporting cryptocurrency transactions.

Ljubljana ranks ahead of second-place Hong Kong, followed by Zurich, Singapore, and Abu Dhabi. The report evaluated cities based on regulation, tax policies, digital infrastructure, and overall wealth concentration.

Slovenia also leads in cryptocurrency wealth per capita, with the average digital asset owner holding $240,500 in virtual currencies. Cyprus and Hong Kong follow, with holdings averaging $175,000 and $97,500, respectively.

Multipolitan co-founder and CEO Nirbhay Handa, meanwhile, highlights the growing trend of individuals choosing their preferred nationality.

“We’re moving from birthrights to choices—where individuals pick the jurisdictions, currencies, and communities that serve them best,” he said.

Meanwhile, the report notes that nations such as the United Arab Emirates are attracting high-net-worth cryptocurrency holders with tax-neutral residency options. Dubai’s Golden Visa program, which grants a decade-long residency with a $544,500 investment, has drawn significant attention from cryptocurrency investors.

Ljubljana’s dominance in the cryptocurrency space reinforces its reputation as a forward-thinking city embracing digital transformation. With regulatory stability and a strong industry network, Slovenia is expected to remain a key player in the future of decentralized finance.
