Ilya Lichtenstein, husband to disgraced crypto hip hop satirist Heather Morgan or “Razzlekhan,” has released a five-minute video from prison, promising to make amends once he becomes a free man.
The unassuming Bitfinex hacker is currently serving a five-year prison sentence for hacking and laundering 120,000 bitcoin (BTC) – worth almost $12 billion at current market prices – from crypto exchange Bitfinex in 2016.
Both Lichtenstein and Morgan pled guilty to the crimes in August 2023. Lichtenstein confessed to being the mastermind behind the hack while Morgan admitted to helping him launder the stolen money. Morgan was given 18 months in prison – a lighter sentence reflecting her lesser role in the crime.
The heist once uncovered, resulted in the largest crypto seizure in U.S. history, and in the video released by Lichtenstein, the 35-year-old psychology graduate promised to atone for his past mistakes.
“My days of malicious hacking are over,” Lichtenstein said. “Long years in federal prison are a powerful deterrent and I have definitely learned my lesson.”
He also emphasized that his wife had no significant role in the crime, firmly repeating, “Razzlekhan is not the Bitfinex hacker, I am.”
Lichtenstein received twenty-nine months credit for time served in custody after his arrest and if he receives additional credit for good behavior, he could be released in about a year, according to his video.
“When I’m released from prison, about a year from now, I plan to dedicate myself to working in the cybersecurity industry,” Lichtenstein said. “And I sincerely hope and expect that next time you hear something about me, it will be much more positive.”
