A recent survey by Consensys and Yougov reveals that many people are concerned about the power of big tech companies and the potential misuse of artificial intelligence (AI).

According to a recent survey conducted by Consensys and Yougov, respondents expressed concern that big tech companies like Meta wield too much power. They also accused these firms of failing to adequately compensate users for the value they generate online.

Consequently, more than three-quarters (78%) of respondents said they want more control over their online identities, and 71% believe they deserve a share of the profits generated from their data. Less than half (46%) expressed trust in existing social media platforms.

In addition to concerns about the use and misuse of personal data by Web2 social media platforms, many respondents expressed worry about AI-generated fake content. According to the survey, 76% of respondents are concerned about AI-generated fake news. However, 60% believe blockchain could help mitigate this issue.

“Globally, 76% are concerned about AI-generated fake news, 60% of whom think blockchain could help mitigate such risks. People in countries more familiar with blockchain are more likely to think it may be able to help mitigate AI fraud and risk,” the Consensys report explains.

According to the study data, Nigeria (86%) leads the pack in terms of respondents concerned about AI’s potential for creating fraudulent content, followed closely by South Africa (85%). In contrast, respondents in Japan (58%) are the least concerned, followed by Vietnam (62%) and Argentina (64%).

Meanwhile, the same survey found that blockchain and crypto are rapidly being embraced in emerging markets like Nigeria, India, and South Africa, while mature markets are lagging behind. Over three-quarters (84%) of the Nigerian population admitted to owning a crypto wallet, and two-thirds (66%) of surveyed South Africans said the same.

Regarding the global financial system, most respondents believe it needs to be revamped. This belief is strongest in Nigeria (25%), Indonesia (23%), and the Philippines (23%), and weakest in South Korea (7%). Overall, about 37% of the respondents believe that international banking and money transfer systems would benefit from decentralization.
