Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that 34 countries have expressed interest in participating in BRICS, reflecting a growing global interest in the group. Russia currently holds the BRICS chairmanship.

Speaking at a meeting with the group’s high representatives in charge of security, Putin shared updates on BRICS activities under Russia’s leadership. Putin was quoted by Tass as saying:

We cannot ignore the growing interest in BRICS on the part of many countries. As of today … 34 countries, to be precise, have already expressed interest in joining the activities of our group in one form or another.

Putin emphasized Russia’s commitment to facilitating smooth integration for potential new members, saying, “Our chairmanship has a special mission — to assist in every way in the swift and natural integration of new member states in all BRICS mechanisms.”

BRICS, originally formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has expanded to 11 members with the addition of Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Putin also discussed the progress of Russia’s BRICS chairmanship program, noting that over 150 events, meetings, and forums have already been held, and that 70% of the program has been completed.

The Russian president recently expressed confidence that the BRICS economic bloc will establish its own parliamentary organization in the future. He emphasized the crucial role of parliaments in fostering multilateralism, justice, and global security, citing BRICS’ principles of democracy, sovereignty, and mutual respect.
