At the close of August, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin sparked interest when his wallet transferred 800 ETH. Shortly after the move, Buterin chimed in on X, addressing a conversation about his rumored sales. “I haven’t sold and kept the proceeds since 2018,” Buterin wrote. “All sales have been to support various projects that I think are valuable, either within the Ethereum ecosystem or broader charity (eg. biomedical R&D).”

A few days later, on Sept. 5, Buterin jumped back into the conversation to offer further clarification. “BTW the above also applies to [layer two (L2)] tokens or other project tokens I hold (incl not-yet-liquid): all proceeds will be donated, again either to support public goods within the ethereum ecosystem or broader charity (eg. biomedical R&D),” he repeated.

The Ethereum co-founder further added:

I also do not intend to invest into L2s or other token projects in the foreseeable future. My goal with giving projects money is to support things that I think are valuable, especially in cases where other parts of the ecosystem might undervalue them. Going forward, I plan to just do this with donations.

After Buterin’s post, someone jumped in to ask him why. The person suggested it might be even more beneficial to invest in projects he believes in—ones with positive outcomes—so that he could use the profits for good down the line. Buterin replied, pointing out that there are other ways to maximize the impact of giving money. For example, he explained, it could be used to secure commitments to benefit ethereum or humanity in specific ways. In fact, he noted, the value of such a pledge could easily outweigh a 0.14% stake in a company.

“But the bigger-picture answer is that the gains of the cycle you describe are real but seem at present less than the gains of having a clear stance that sets an example and increases confidence that I’m not part of some plot to twist the ethereum protocol in directions that benefit random infra/L2 tokens that I hold,” Buterin concluded.
