The Zambian government has initiated the process of creating an artificial intelligence (AI) framework, as announced by the country’s Minister of Science and Technology, Felix Mutati. Additionally, the government is collaborating with the Tony Blair Institute to formulate an AI strategy.

In a statement shared via social media, Minister Mutati revealed that Zambia is revising the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act, a crucial step in facilitating AI deployment. The announcement about establishing the AI framework was made during an AI conference in Lusaka.

Sarah Luyele Njamu, CEO of Compu-Connect Education Group and the conference’s organizer, emphasized Zambia’s advantageous position. She claimed that the country can leverage AI for economic growth, improved healthcare, enhanced education, and sustainable development.

She also pointed to Zambia’s youthful population as another factor that works in the country’s favor. Meanwhile, by disclosing its AI plans, Zambia joins a few African countries that have similarly signaled their intention to embrace the technology. In addition to voicing support for AI, Mutati has also praised cryptocurrency, which he describes as a “revolutionary technology” that his country needs.

As previously reported by Bitcoin.com News, Zambia has conducted real-life crypto usage simulations. Mutati stated that these simulations aim to strike a balance between innovation and citizens’ safety. The results of the simulation are expected to inform the formulation of crypto regulations.
