A Chinese court ruled in favor of Tron DAO founder Justin Sun in his long-running defamation lawsuit against Chongqing Business Media Group. The People’s Court of China reportedly found that the media house’s claims of Sun’s alleged involvement in insider trading, fraud, and money laundering were “entirely unsubstantiated.”

According to a statement issued by Tron DAO, Chongqing Business Media Group subsequently “removed all of its false content and issued a formal statement of apology to Sun.” The statement also revealed that the media house admitted to publishing defamatory content without fact-checking.

Sun, who celebrated the ruling in a post on X, filed the lawsuit after Chongqing Business Media Group published a hit piece on one of its platforms on March 11, 2022. The article, which piggybacked on a piece published by The Verge, also suggested that Sun was under investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

However, instead of “cleverly” using a disclaimer as the author of the Verge report did, Sun claims that media houses which republished the story did not take similar precautions.

Meanwhile, the Tron DAO statement asserts that the ruling rectified the injustices Sun has long endured. It also sets a legal precedent for the broader blockchain community on how unfounded rumors should be handled and dispelled, the statement said. Tron DAO further emphasizes that the judgment reminds journalists of the importance of adhering to professional ethics, including ensuring that facts are authentic and accurate.
