For many years, road maintenance in Jamaica has been poorly managed because too many agencies shared the responsibility, causing confusion, delays, and uneven standards. On top of that, we have not done enough regular upkeep, so roads wear out faster and cost more to fix. That approach just doesn’t work anymore. So, we’re now reviewing the entire system and considering creating one single road authority to manage all road maintenance.
With help from the World Bank and the UK government, we’re also using technology like maps, GPS, and AI to track and plan road repairs smarter. We’ve already mapped over 90% of the country’s roads, and we’re creating a system to help with proper budgeting, planning, and long-term care.
We’re even developing a uniform address system and zip codes, so there’s one clear way to write and find every address in Jamaica. This shift from patchwork to a tech-driven, sustainable plan will help our roads last longer, save money, and make travel safer.
