161 letters from relatives and friends of CZ petition publicly released by the court, the second one:
Jessica Zhao, sister from CZ
I am Zhao Changpeng's sister, who used to serve as a Managing Director at Morgan Stanley. I am writing this letter to share my views on Zhao Changpeng as a person.
I grew up with Changpeng. As a child, he has always been kind, curious, and active. During his growth, he had many interests, mainly in sports and technology, and he enjoyed using his skills to help others. When we were in high school in Vancouver, he served as the captain of the school's men's volleyball team for five consecutive years. At the same time, he also served as an assistant coach for the women's volleyball team. He devoted himself wholeheartedly to volleyball, and his team became one of the most respected high school teams in Vancouver. Chang Peng himself also joined the Vancouver City team and was named the Most Valuable Player for several consecutive years.
Later, in Changpeng's career, I saw the same dedication and passion. Before Binance, he had already run several startup companies. Although not as successful as Binance, he is passionate about every project and uses technology to create maximum value for clients. Having gone through many challenges, he sees every setback as a learning opportunity and never gives up.
Until today, Changpeng still sees himself as a simple technician. His business approach is very simple - we create value for our customers, and revenue naturally follows. This mentality has never changed since his first startup in 2005. When someone proposes "alternative business practices" to him, his answer is always, "That kind of game is too complicated for me. I don't have the time and energy to deal with it. I'd rather stay a simple technician
I remember one thing very clearly. In early 2016, before Binance existed, a business acquaintance approached him and proposed a collaborative project. Changpeng provided the technology, and this person provided a license to operate an online platform that allowed people to place bets on random items. This seemed like a low-risk, quick money making opportunity, but Changpeng refused. He told me about it at a family dinner. He said, 'I don't think this has any value. It's just using people who can't think clearly to make quick money. I'd rather spend my time on more meaningful things.' When he said this, I felt very proud.
After retiring from Morgan Stanley, I became a leadership and management consultant. In the early days of Binance, I provided short-term group coaching services for the team, where I had the opportunity to observe how meetings were conducted and how decisions were made. The overall guiding principle set by Changpeng for the team has always been to provide the best value to customers. In each discussion, there are two main considerations: protecting the security of customer funds and providing the best service. I have witnessed some transactions being debated and abandoned because the team believed that potential projects did not meet the standards for creating customer value. I saw that the team discussed some of the practices adopted by competitors and decided not to adopt them because they believed that the customer's interests were not being best met. I believe that the same guiding principles are still very dominant and active in Binance culture today.
After the FTX incident in 2022, there were large withdrawals on the Binance platform. When I talked to Chang Peng on the phone, he was very relaxed about it. He said that all client funds are in their own accounts; They can withdraw as they please without causing any financial pressure on Binance. The real stress test lies in the technical aspect, that is, whether the system can handle such a large number of transactions. Technology is our profession, and we have an excellent team. As expected, Binance has processed withdrawals without any problems in both finance and technology. Binance has never abused any customer funds. Changpeng has never harmed anyone and has always been loyal to his values, doing good for the community.
Personally, Changpeng has always been a good younger brother who supports me and a loving uncle to my son. Changpeng is a brother I can rely on when needed. He is also my best friend, and I trust him unconditionally. Having him as my brother is one of the most beautiful things in my life, and I am very grateful for it.
My son has shown an interest in technology since he was very young. Chang Peng kindly commented, 'He's very geeky, just like me.' The two of them had a great time playing. After achieving success on Binance, I asked Changpeng what he had bought for himself since he was now very wealthy. He said, 'A new drone.' On weekends, he would take my son to the park, teach him how to pilot the drone, and take videos of the surrounding scenery. These are one of the most beautiful memories of my son's childhood. As my son grew up, he started playing with tech gadgets such as Raspberry Pi and Arduino board, and he also developed a strong interest in network security. Chang Peng often communicates with my son on these topics and encourages him to continue exploring further. For my son, Uncle Changpeng is one of his favorite people in the world.
Chang Peng must have made mistakes in the regulatory environment in the United States, and there is no doubt that he will learn from these experiences. However, in my opinion, he has always been a person who sets high standards for himself, strives to do good things for others, and gains great personal pride and self-esteem from it. Even after achieving success and fame in the cryptocurrency industry, he remains a humble, simple, warm, caring, and compassionate individual, both personally and professionally.
