Like Inspiration4, Fram2 will carry a suite of scientific research projects aimed at advancing our understanding of how spaceflight affects human health. Today, we dedicated our time to these research projects, preparing for the experiments we’ll conduct in orbit.
In addition to three professional cameras, we’re bringing a range of electronics: four iPad mini, two iPhone Pro Max, three laptop computers, a ham radio, and even an X-ray generator, which we’ll use to capture the first-ever X-ray image of the human body in space—something crucial for future long-duration missions to Mars and beyond.
The Dragon wasn’t originally designed with onboard charging capability. USB-A ports were later added upon request but with only limited power supply. To keep our devices running, we rely on power banks.
Altogether, we’ll be carrying over 1 kWh of power banks and batteries. In a confined 10-m³ volume, they will generate a significant amount of heat, making thermal management a challenge. We’ve also developed new procedures for handling potential battery fires given the risks associated with these batteries.
