U.S. federal prosecutors and the co-founders of the crypto mixer Samourai Wallet have requested that the court grant more time to consider potentially dismissing the case, following the U.S. Department of Justice's reduction of its crypto enforcement team.
In a letter to Manhattan Federal Judge Richard Berman on April 28, Samourai Wallet CEO Keonne Rodriguez and CTO William Hill's lawyers stated that they jointly requested with the government to extend the “pre-motion schedule by 16 days.”
On April 10, lawyers for Samourai's executives indicated that they had written to acting Manhattan U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton, requesting the dismissal of the case, following a memorandum issued by Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche on April 7 that closed the Justice Department's crypto team.
The lawyers stated: “On April 24, 2025, defense counsel met face-to-face with the prosecutors and their superiors at the U.S. Attorney's Office to discuss this request.”
The letter noted: “The defendants believe that extending the pre-motion schedule is reasonable to avoid significant costs in preparing motions while the government determines its position.”
The letter also added that the prosecution agreed to postpone “without expressing any views on the substance of the case.”
Rodriguez and Hill of Samourai Wallet were charged in April 2024 with conspiracy to launder money and operating an unlicensed money transmission business, to which both pleaded not guilty.
Blanche's memorandum mentioned: “The Department of Justice is not the regulatory agency for digital assets,” and stated that it would abandon enforcement and investigation efforts except for “cases against individuals who harm digital asset investors or use digital assets in criminal activities.”
Currently, the motion deadline for the Samourai executives' case is May 13, the response deadline is June 10, and the reply deadline is June 24. The letter proposed to push the motion deadline to May 29, the response deadline to June 26, and the reply deadline to July 10.
This extension will not affect the trial date set for early November.
This move is the latest in a long list of court actions under the Trump administration's favorable stance towards the industry, aimed at dismissing the prosecution's crypto cases.
On April 9, SafeMoon CEO Braden John Karony was charged with wire fraud and money laundering, citing Blanche's directive to request the dismissal of the case.
Meanwhile, on April 28, the DeFi Education Fund petitioned the White House to dismiss the charges against Tornado Cash co-founder Roman Storm and called for immediate action to “stop the Biden administration's illegal crackdown on open-source software development.”
