According to reports, Chinese tech giant Huawei has developed a powerful artificial intelligence (AI) chip that may compete with the high-end processors of American chipmaker Nvidia.
As reported by The Wall Street Journal on April 27, citing informed sources, Huawei plans to begin testing a new AI chip named Ascend 910D and has reached out to local tech companies, which are expected to receive the first batch of sample chips by the end of May.
The project is still in its early stages and is expected to require a series of tests to evaluate the chip's performance and prepare it for customers.
Huawei hopes that its latest Ascend AI processor will be more powerful than Nvidia's H100 chip, which was used for AI training in 2022.
Additionally, Huawei is preparing to ship over 800,000 early models of the Ascend 910B and 910C chips to customers, including state-owned telecom operators and private AI developers, such as TikTok's parent company ByteDance.
Reports indicate that Beijing is also encouraging Chinese AI developers to increase their procurement of domestic chips, as trade tensions between the U.S. and China continue to escalate.
In mid-April, Nvidia stated that U.S. government export restrictions on China have significantly impacted its business with the country, and it expects its AI chip inventory to face about $5.5 billion in costs.
The Trump administration added Nvidia's H20 chip—the most powerful processor the company can sell to China—to an expanding list of semiconductor sales restrictions.
Some key components of AI chips, such as the latest high-bandwidth memory units, have also been restricted for export to China by the U.S.
Huawei is focused on building more efficient and faster systems, such as the CloudMatrix 384 computing system released in April, which connects Ascend 910C chips. This system will utilize these chip arrays to enhance performance through large-scale computing rather than solely improving the processors individually.
