Original: “CloneX avatars under RTFKT back online after NFT display issues”
Over 19,800 CloneX digital avatars developed by NFT company RTFKT Studios have reappeared after being blocked by Cloudflare, as these NFTs seemed to violate Cloudflare's terms of service.
On April 24, a message appeared on the screen stating: “This content has been restricted. Using Cloudflare's basic services in this way violates the terms of service. Please visit cfl.re/tos for more information.”
RTFKT's Chief Technology Officer Samuel Cardillo denied claims of unpaid fees, pointing out that the issue stemmed from changes in RTFKT's current “Cloudflare settings.”
NFT content creator Wale Swoosh previously speculated that RTFKT might have subscribed to a Cloudflare plan unsuitable for high-traffic image services. Cloudflare offers a range of website infrastructure services.
According to Cardillo, most CloneX NFTs have begun to reappear, and he added that Cloudflare has resolved the issue.
However, this incident sparked strong outrage among some CloneX holders, including one holder who spent $1.25 million on a CloneX NFT.
The issue prompted Cardillo to seek more decentralized solutions for hosting NFTs.
“I am working closely with ArDrive to decentralize CloneX and Animus to ensure that after April 30, your favorite artworks will never experience downtime again.”
In another post, Cardillo stated that CloneX will specifically migrate to the decentralized data storage platform Arweave.
Since RTFKT's closure in January, Cardillo has been the last remaining defender of RTFKT.
RTFKT—known for pioneering virtual sneakers and acquired by Nike in December 2021—has essentially been a one-person operation since ceasing operations in January.
“Please remember, I am the last defender, so I am doing everything personally,” Cardillo said in response to a barrage of complaints following the incident.
RTFKT confirmed its closure through a vague letter, claiming it “has not ended,” but will become what it has always aimed to be—“a relic of cultural revolution.”
Since the announcement in December, RTFKT has not made any substantial progress.
In recent months, several NFT markets have also shut down.
DraftKings, GameStop, and the cryptocurrency exchange Bybit have all closed their NFT markets, with Bybit noting a decline in NFT trading volume in an announcement on April 8.
X2Y2 also recently announced that its NFT market will close on April 30, as the company plans to shift towards the AI sector.
