Ethereum core developers are considering increasing the first-layer Gas limit by 4 times as one of the main features of the next hard fork, Fusaka, following Pectra.

According to Ethereum Foundation protocol support team developer Sophia Gold, the Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 9678 proposed on April 23 suggests testing an increase of the Ethereum Gas limit to 150 million in the Fusaka hard fork.

Ethereum core developer Tim Beiko stated in a meeting summary on April 24 that during the last All Core Developers Execution (ACDE) meeting, participants discussed raising the Gas limit as a "main feature" of Fusaka.

Beiko said, "To unify the default settings of clients and prioritize this, we drafted an EIP. This is somewhat unconventional, but not without precedent (see EIP-7840). We plan to merge it early next week and formally submit it as SFI at the next ACDE meeting."

"As work continues, we expect to identify what changes need to be made within the protocol to support a higher Gas limit. This means more EIPs will need to be added to Fusaka, although the scope of the fork has already been determined."

The next Ethereum upgrade, Pectra, is scheduled to go live on the mainnet in May, while Fusaka may launch by the end of 2025.

Regarding the motivation for raising the Gas limit, developers indicated that there is significant interest in scaling the first-layer execution layer, which is likely to be achieved through the implementation of new features.

However, this requires guidance from execution layer developers, as "we expect to discover client vulnerabilities under a higher Gas limit than the current mainnet," which will "require client developers to invest time in testing and fixing any vulnerabilities that arise, making it reasonable to include it as an EIP in the hard fork."

Beiko stated, "While the Gas limit is ultimately set by validators, we all agree that coordinating client defaults through an EIP will help maintain this priority and ensure that all clients update their defaults when Fusaka goes live."

According to Ycharts data, the average Gas limit for Ethereum has been around 30 million since it increased in August 2021.

Validators supported raising the network Gas limit on February 4, increasing the maximum Gas usage for transactions in a single Ethereum block. Ycharts data shows it is currently slightly below 36 million.
