OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated that users sending polite phrases like "please" and "thank you" while interacting with ChatGPT is costing the company tens of millions of dollars.

"This tens of millions of dollars is well spent—you never know what it will bring," Altman responded on the X platform when asked about the related costs on April 16.

Altman's response sparked a discussion about why users interact with AI models in a polite manner.

Some AI users expressed that their politeness towards chatbots stems from concerns that future AI, once it gains consciousness, will decide how to treat humans based on how people treated it in the past.

Others, like engineer Carl Youngblood, stated that they choose to treat AI politely for personal growth reasons: "Being polite to AI is a moral responsibility for me. I do it out of self-interest. The indifference we show in our daily interactions can lead to a degradation of interpersonal skills."

A survey released by Future in December 2024 showed that 67% of U.S. users exhibit politeness when interacting with AI assistants, with 55% believing it is the "right thing to do," and 12% worrying that being rude to AI could backfire in the future.

Debate on ChatGPT's Energy Consumption

In September 2023, Bitcoin mining critic and Digiconomist founder Alex de Vries pointed out in a research paper that ChatGPT consumes about 3 watt-hours of electricity for each request it processes.

However, Josh You, a data analyst at the AI research organization Epoch AI, believes this figure is overestimated. He stated that considering the significant improvements in model and hardware efficiency after 2023, the actual energy consumption might be closer to 0.3 watt-hours per request.

Some users commented under Altman's post: Why can't ChatGPT save on electricity costs when processing polite words like "please" and "thank you"?

Altman recently stated that as AI model efficiency improves, the cost of AI-generated content is decreasing at a rate of tenfold each year.

Meanwhile, despite the rapid progress of emerging competitors like DeepSeek from China, OpenAI still expects its revenue to triple this year, reaching $12.7 billion.

However, OpenAI anticipates that it will not achieve positive cash flow until 2029, at which point its revenue is expected to exceed $125 billion.
