Additionally, some friends believe that "as long as the mnemonic phrase is saved well, the password can be forgotten."
This is true for most conventional software wallets, but for certain advanced wallets that use the BIP39 standard and enable password extension (passphrase), this statement is inaccurate:
🔐 What is BIP39 password extension?
According to the BIP39 standard, a wallet's mnemonic can include an "optional password" when generating a seed. This password is also called:
• passphrase
• extended password
• the 25th word (as some vendors refer to it)
This password is actually an important parameter in the derivation path calculation. In other words, the mnemonic + password together determine the final generated wallet address. If the password is different, even if the mnemonic is the same, the exported address will be completely different.
🧱 Which wallets use this mechanism?
The following wallets explicitly support and recommend users to set a BIP39 password:
• Trezor (can set up a "hidden wallet")
• CoolWallet
• SafeWallet
• Bitcoin Blade Wallet
• Some multi-signature solutions, such as Specter, Electrum, etc., can use optional passwords;
So for some wallets, just having the mnemonic is not enough; you also need to remember the password you set.
For example, wallets like Trezor, CoolWallet, and SafeWallet that support BIP39 password extension will encrypt the address based on the mnemonic.
If you forget this password, even if the mnemonic is not lost, you will not be able to recover your assets. Therefore, it is essential to save both the mnemonic and the password and back them up properly.
