The foundation behind the layer-one blockchain Sei has announced that it is exploring the possibility of acquiring the genetic testing company 23andMe, which has recently filed for bankruptcy.
In a post on the X platform on March 27, the Sei network stated that its foundation is considering acquiring 23andMe "to protect the genetic privacy of 15 million Americans" by placing the company's data on the blockchain. According to the foundation, if the acquisition of the biotechnology company goes through, it plans to deploy all genetic information on the blockchain and "return data ownership to users through encrypted, confidential transmission methods."

"We believe that user data sovereignty is a national security issue," Sei Network wrote in the announcement. "When a U.S. biotechnology pioneer faces bankruptcy, millions of individual genomic data are vulnerable to attacks from parties that may not share the values of transparency and open access."
This announcement came four days after 23andMe announced its Chapter 11 filing in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Missouri. At that time, the company stated that "the way it stores, manages, or protects customer data will not change," reportedly including genetic information from approximately 15 million people worldwide.
For many, 23andMe's bankruptcy has reignited concerns about data privacy, especially in an era where the company holds genetic information from millions of individuals.
Following the bankruptcy announcement, New York Attorney General Letitia James and California Attorney General Rob Bonta urged 23andMe users to contact the company to delete their personal data, stating that they have the right to protect their privacy and request the destruction of any DNA samples. The two authorities indicated that state laws grant 23andMe users control over their own data.
After the Sei network's post on X, the price of the Sei (SEI) token briefly rose from $0.209 to $0.215—an increase of about 3%.
