The trend in the meme market can change rapidly, and today most meme players are focused on $Ghibli—within less than a day of its launch, its market cap soared to 28 million dollars.

Social media is filled with AI-generated images in the Ghibli style, and even Sam Altman and Elon Musk are joining in on the fun. Crypto project teams are also scrambling to create many Ghibli-style derivative works.

Here’s a quick introduction to the background of the fast-tracked token $Ghibli.

Ghibli? Ghibli? AI Ghibli?

Ghibli (hereinafter referred to as Ghibli) style refers to the unique visual style exhibited in the animated works created by the famous Japanese animation studio Ghibli (Studio Ghibli). The Ghibli studio was co-founded by renowned Japanese animation director Hayao Miyazaki and his partners. The studio has produced countless well-known works, including "Spirited Away," "My Neighbor Totoro," and "Howl's Moving Castle," all of which are household names.

The formation of the Ghibli style can be traced back to Miyazaki's early creative experiences. The Ghibli style is characterized by a watercolor texture, high saturation colors, and unique character designs. When Ghibli is mentioned, many people can easily visualize refreshing images combining blue skies and green grass.

Ghibli Style + AI

The distinctive Ghibli style has become a classic painting style in traditional animation and gaming. Since the rise of AIGC in 2022, AI image generation technology has rapidly developed, and the Ghibli style has been adopted by leading AI image generation models like Midjourney and Stablediffusion. In recent years, many Ghibli-style AI derivatives have emerged.

The copyright issues surrounding AI-generated images have always been controversial, but a few years ago, Miyazaki expressed his skepticism about AI-generated art, stating, "It is an insult to life."

How did $Ghibli become popular?

The explosive popularity of the $Ghibli token can be traced back to the update of the GPT-4o image generation feature.

Yesterday, the image generation feature of GPT-4o received a significant update, allowing users to directly use the "image-to-image" function in the GPT-4o chat interface. This means you can give GPT an image and then input simple natural language instructions, and GPT can generate a new image based on the original image and instructions, such as: "Turn the image into a Ghibli cartoon style."

Although this technology for changing artistic styles had already matured two years ago, the update of GPT-4o lowered the barrier for AI image generation, allowing AI users to easily operate the "image-to-image" function without needing professional AI image generation software.

The lowered entry threshold, combined with the fun of creating Ghibli-style derivatives, led to a viral spread of Ghibli-style images on social media starting yesterday.

By around 6 PM yesterday, a token named $Ghibli appeared on Pump.Fun. The token icon was generated in the Ghibli style and featured the avatar of Pump.Fun founder @a1lon9.

Clearly, the narrative behind $Ghibli is simple and direct, riding the wave of AI image generation's rapid spread. However, at the initial launch of $Ghibli, it did not attract much attention, and X user @Kris7146 pointed out that the $Ghibli token had serious chip bundling issues.

However, with many on-chain buyers jumping in, the price of $Ghibli continued to rise, hovering around a market cap of 3 million dollars after the $JellyJelly incident concluded last night.

Early this morning, Sam Altman updated his X account profile picture to an image in the Ghibli style, and when the community discovered this, the price of $Ghibli skyrocketed from a market cap of 3 million dollars. But that wasn't all; at 6:33 AM, Musk posted a meme combining Ghibli-style elements with The Lion King, a self-portrait, and Doge, captioned "Today's theme."

With the backing of these big names, the price of $Ghibli couldn't stop rising, reaching a market cap of 28 million dollars before retreating, currently sitting around 20 million dollars.

The explosive popularity of $Ghibli is essentially a reflection of the market's hot sentiment, concentrating attention and liquidity on-chain, without particularly outstanding innovation in narrative. However, for meme tokens, whether the narrative is hardcore is just one of many influencing factors; when the market "feels it," the rise naturally follows.

As an ordinary participant, when sensing the market rhythm with real money, be cautious and maintain a sense of proportion.

(PS: Besides the Ghibli style, GPT-4o's image generation feature has various other styles to explore)
