If you want to solve a problem, you must spend 80% of your energy breaking down and identifying the issue, and the remaining 20% on finding solutions, which is actually sufficient.
Ray Dalio mentions in "Principles" how to enter a positive cycle; the methods for solving problems and making progress should spiral upward, rather than rise in a straight line—
The spiral consists of five steps:
1) First, ask the purpose and set goals: this requires deep thinking, synthesis, observation, and optimization skills;
2) Identify the problem and have zero tolerance:
This requires insight, zero tolerance for adverse situations, and comprehensive abilities;
3) Diagnose the problem, pinpoint the issue, and find the root cause:
This requires high logic, a willingness to "touch the nerve," and discovering multiple possibilities;
4) Design a plan to eliminate the problem:
This requires insight, practicality, and creativity;
5) Execute the plan: this requires discipline, good work habits, a results-oriented approach, and foresight.
This process requires us to view the problem itself or ourselves as a series of results produced by a machine.
Engage in higher-level thinking by overlooking your machine and considering how to change it to create better outcomes.
