Arguing about whether speculation is part of DeSci is meaningless.
In tradfi, I have a case where I helped a Chinese patent cockroach company buy up relatively low-priced patents from various universities in Australia, then inflate the prices to find buyers. It's akin to the old-school Pump Science.
Most of it is useless; the goal is to deceive various levels of the Chinese government for funding, and even lure other companies into infringement to profit from lawsuits.
If you say this is despicable, it indeed is. But do university labs and professors need this money? They really do. They work hard to produce a lot, and their annual salary is over 100,000 Australian dollars.
Do not advise others to be good without experiencing their hardships.
You say Scihub infringes? So what? Perhaps some "rights" shouldn't exist; they are products of bad laws. In the face of bad laws, we should overthrow them rather than submit to them.
Kalanick initiated the Greyball operation to make government regulation of Uber ineffective. Back in the day, to help Australian Airbnb hosts avoid government penalties, I also established an IoT company called Keyhub, placing smart key cabinets in stores to replace face-to-face check-ins, significantly increasing the enforcement costs for the government, akin to a mixing device in the Airbnb era.
DeSci should rise to the level of a political movement, not only to draw attention and sponsorship to underfunded research but also to ensure that research deemed unacceptable by those in power receives attention and sponsorship. That is the meaning of "De."
In "The Matrix," the architect advocates for the violent notion of having 200,000 mechanical octopuses kill 200,000 people in Xi'an, and the ideal of "sovereign individuals" possessing nuclear bombs should also be treated fairly by DeSci. If prejudice against funding limits humanity's ability to create (or destroy) fairly, then the bad laws regarding funding should be overthrown in this century.
Do not let prejudice limit your perspective.
