The Vatican Library, founded in the 15th century, is utilizing NFTs to enhance its online engagement and connect with supporters, particularly in Italy.

This innovative initiative, developed in collaboration with NTT DATA Italia, aims to leverage Web3 technology to expand the library's online community and provide access to its extensive manuscript collection.
The project, which was launched in Japan last year, is currently expanding from Italy to Europe. Italian users who share the "Vatican Library Web3 Support Project" on social media before July 16th will receive a silver NFT, unlocking high-resolution images of 15 manuscripts. Those who donate to the library will receive a gold NFT, unlocking access to 21 manuscripts.
These NFTs are described as non-transferable and "soul-bound," permanently linked to the recipient's wallet, ensuring that they remain unique and enduring symbols of support. Concept validation on OpenSea indicates that NFTs based on Polygon have been distributed to 419 different owners.
NTT DATA Italia has played a significant role in preserving the Vatican Library's historical documents. The company's digital archive service, AMLAD, has been globally applied to enhance the protection of the library's extensive collection, which includes 180,000 manuscripts, over 1.5 million books, 200,000 photographs, 150,000 printed materials, and over 300,000 coins and medals.
NTT DATA Italia's CEO, Ludovico Diaz, stated, "Our goal remains to make the priceless cultural heritage of the Vatican Library available for public viewing. We will continue this important preservation work and expand the use of blockchain technology to other areas."
Library director Don Mauro Mantovani emphasized that the project aligns with the library's mission to promote research and scientific development. Mantovani stressed that NTT DATA's initiatives are crucial for connecting the library to new communities and future projects involving global partners.
Looking ahead, the Vatican Library plans to introduce immersive experiences, allowing users to explore its historical assets through augmented reality. This initiative underscores the library's commitment to utilizing technological advancements to protect and share its cultural heritage.
By integrating NFTs and blockchain technology, the Vatican Library has not only preserved its historical treasures but also attracted tech-savvy modern audiences. The project demonstrates how traditional institutions can adapt to contemporary digital trends to expand their influence and reach.
